Over 350 Volunteers Lend a Hand at an Awesome REI-Ridge Trail Service Day
With over 350 volunteers, the November 1 REI-Ridge Trail Service Day marked our largest trail workday of the year! We had to cancel 3 work sites due to unsafe conditions after rain showers on Friday. However, many hardy volunteers turned up at the other 9 sites, ready to work ... rain or shine! We built 900 feet of new Ridge Trail, removed fences, planted native vegetation, and gave the Trail some serious TLC. All around the Bay, in various weather conditions, volunteers’ hard work made a big difference!
Since 2008 the Ridge Trail Council has partnered with REI and local land managers to host this annual trail stewardship extravaganza. Over the past 7 years, nearly 3,400 volunteers have donated about 13,500 hours at this event. A long-time partner of the Bay Area Ridge Trail Council, REI has assisted our work through grants and support for Service Day and other trail events. This year, REI not only brought stylish t-shirts for all volunteers, they presented a $30,000 check to help us plan, build, and steward the Ridge Trail!
Our park partners – agencies, land trusts, and nonprofits – planned some excellent volunteer projects. Chipotle Mexican Grill generously donated delicious burritos to feed all the hungry volunteers. Yum! And this year, Wells Fargo joined us as an event sponsor.
Volunteers are essential to the Ridge Trail as we work to connect a 550-mile loop on the ridgelines above San Francisco Bay. Today, 350 miles are open and protected for future generations! If you were one of our volunteers on November 1, we’d love to hear your feedback about Service Day, so please take a moment to email your comments to Emily@ridgtrail.org or post photos on www.facebook.com/ridgetrail!
