Construction started late last fall on the new 0.4-mile Ridge Trail segment in Vallejo's 15-acre Glen Cove Waterfront Park.  An opening celebration is scheduled for Saturday, June 16.  The off-road shoreline trail is part of the Carquinez Strait Scenic Loop Trail segment that connects Benicia State Recreation Area and Glen Cove Marina.  The Ridge Trail Council endorsed a $75,000 Coastal Conservancy trail construction grant to the Greater Vallejo Recreation District (GVRD).

Construction of the trail had been delayed for several months due to occupation of the site by Native Americans concerned about a sacred burial site on the property.  The project's lead agency and property manager, the GVRD, negotiated with the two tribes - Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation and the Cortina Band of Wintun Indians - resulting in the creation of a conservation and cultural easement between the city of Vallejo and the two federally recognized tribes.  As a result of the agreement, the bathrooms were eliminated and the parking lot was downsized and located away from the sacred sites.
