Ridge Trail Bike Circumnavigation Complete!
We envision a connected 550-mile trail on the ridgelines above San Francisco Bay, but it’s still a work in progress. Some people, however, just can’t wait till it’s all finished. Previously, hikers have traveled the route on consecutive days and recently Ridge Trail Board member Austin McInerny teamed up with a professional photographer and a recreation writer to cycle across as much of the Ridge Trail as possible over 5 days (August 25-29).
Austin and his team pored over maps and scouted a clockwise route (from the Ridge Trail office in the Presidio), relying on public transit to cross gaps where the Ridge Trail is not yet open.
Key trail partners and other heroes responsible for various Ridge Trail sections joined the riders each day. Riders wanted to experience more of the trail first hand - and draw attention to the value and need for a long-distance trail such as the Ridge Trail linking communities, urban areas, and open spaces around the Bay.
The trip will be chronicled with an article and photographs in BIKE magazine, highlighting both progress and successes so far, as well as the challenges ahead to complete the Ridge Trail. Stay tuned for links!
